I am asked all the time how to find a wedding gown in the right size. It is somewhat cruel, but wedding gowns tend to run one to two sizes too small (bridesmaids are not exempt from this either – those gowns can run one size small as well…). There are many reasons for this – European sizing does not translate and different designers have different standards for sizing, so don’t go on a crash diet – just go up a size and ignore that tag!! Also, when you are shopping for your gown, (if the shop allows), take pictures of yourself in the dresses you really like. This way you can compare them later; I suggest waiting a few days and looking at them all again – see which ones really stand out. Another tip – let a salesperson show you a gown. A wedding gown is like nothing you have ever worn before, and they have seen these gowns on many brides – they know who looks best in what. You may have something in mind, and they show you something you never thought you would like.
Last tip - always try on a veil when you are trying on gowns! Veils make the entire ensemble, so you want to make sure you see it all together.
Happy Shopping!!
Earlier this week I saw a posting on craigslist, looking for formal gowns for a new consignment shop. Always one to seek out a bargain, I answered the ad, asking for more information on the shop and what kind of clothing it carried. I got a reply from Donna D’Angiolini, one of the co-owners of this new shop, Elegante Affairs, who told me this shop is a high end bridal consignment shop, less than a month old. I had to go check it out!!!
I went by on Saturday and was DUMBSTRUCK by the selection they had. Gorgeous gowns, 80% of them still with tags, due to either coming from other bridal shops that were switching inventory and simply needing to clear space, or brides who purchased the gown then changed their mind. I met with Donna and her partner, Jann Tursi, who have been hard at work opening this shop – and it shows! Walking in, you feel like you are walking into a high end boutique. The shop is simply charming, with organized racks of bridal gowns, bridesmaid gowns, mothers gowns and evening/prom gowns. Shopping here, you will not be sifting through disorganized dresses – you will be directed to the racks to look through, then shown to a dressing area and offered help in changing. The best part? These high end gowns (again, most of them new!!!) are priced between $200 – $900. And should you need alterations, they know several good seamstresses to direct you too.
So, you are getting a high end gown, with high end service, in a charming shop, for a budget friendly price. What more can you ask for?! If you are looking for a great gown at an incredible price go check them out – Elegant Affaires, 308 N. Main Street, Chalfont, Pa. I know I will be there with many of my brides!
